OCULOPLASTIC SURGERY
OVERVIEW
Oculoplastic surgery, also called oculoplastics, refers to surgical procedures that improve the form and function of the eye, and treat conditions that affect the eye socket (orbit), eyelids, tear ducts, and the periocular face. Oculoplastic surgeons also focus on the reconstruction of the eyelids and its associated structures.
WHEN IS OCULOPLASTIC SURGERY INDICATED?
Oculoplastic surgery is indicated to treat eye conditions such as drooping eyelids, abnormal position of the eyelids, blocked tear ducts, orbital fractures and tumours of the eyelid skin and orbit, to name a few. Even though oculoplastic surgery is medically indicated and necessary, many people choose to undergo oculoplastic surgery for cosmetic reasons.
OCULOPLASTIC PROCEDURES
Our ophthalmologists have extensive training in performing surgeries such as:
- BLEPHAROPLASTY
also known as an eyelid lift, this procedure is performed on the upper or lower eyelids to help rejuvenate the eye. Blepharoplasty is indicated to repair droopy eyelids, excess skin of the upper or lower eyelids (which may interfere with the peripheral vision) and bags under the eyes. - FILLERS
eye fillers are typically used to tighten the tear trough or under the eye area. Fillers help make the area look plumper and brighter. Types of eye fillers include hyaluronic acid to help collagen production, poly-L-lactic acid and calcium hydroxylapatite. Fillers can also be used for medical reasons, such as poor eyelid closure to help the lids close in order to preserve the moisture and health of the eye.
- BOTOX
these are injections that help eliminate the appearance of wrinkles and lines around the eyes and mouth. Botox injections work by weakening the muscle contractions that cause wrinkles. Botox has additional uses in ophthalmology, such as the treatment of squint as a result of eye muscle overactivity. Botox can also be used to medically induce long term lid closure in cases where the eye may benefit from having the lid closed for some time to allow for healing of the ocular surface. - EYELID RECONSTRUCTION
this is indicated to help treat eyelid lesions, open defects, lacerations and scar deformities. The main goal of eyelid reconstruction is to preserve the form and function of the eyelids. During this procedure, either a graft or tissue transfer will be used to reconstruct the eyelids.
