E-EYE LASER TREATMENT

OVERVIEW
Dry eye disorders occur due to an issue with the lacrimal layer that arises from the limited secretion of tears or heightened evaporation. Most dry eye cases are due to the evaporation form due to the insufficient external lipid layer that makes up the lacrimal film.

The E>Eye IRPL technology helps treat dry eye disease by enhancing the capacity of the meibomian glands, which are the oil glands of the eyelids. Malfunctioning meibomian glands can progress to atrophy, which leads to an advanced form of dry eye disease.

When the meibomian glands cannot produce sufficient oil for the eyes, the tears evaporate rapidly, leading to cyclical inflammation. Typical dry eye symptoms include a burning sensation in the eyes, watery eyes, discomfort within the eyes and red eyes. However, Intense Regulated Pulsed Light (IRPL) helps rehydrate the eyes and restore gland function. The E>Eye emits controlled light pulses that specifically hone on the meibomian glands. As a result, the light pulses stimulate the parasympathetic nerve, a nerve that feeds the meibomian glands.

Stimulation of the parasympathetic nerve (neurological stimulation) helps to:

  • Rejuvenate the meibomian glands
  • Enhance meibomian gland secretion
  • Improve the lipid covering of the tear film

The controlled light pulses from the IRPL device disrupt the cycle of inflammation, which, in the long term, improves dry eye symptoms. In addition, the light emitted reduces further deterioration (atrophy) of the meibomian glands.

E-EYE LASER TREATMENT

During the procedure, you will be requested to sit back in a chair with metal eye goggles on. Afterwards, the optometrist applies an ultrasound gel near the eyes around the temples and cheekbones. The IRPL device directs a sequence of flashes beneath the eye. With the eradication of obstructions, the glands obtain healthy, sufficient oil production that promotes the secretion of healthy tears.

The full E-Eye laser treatment involves three sessions for the best results, with a fourth treatment as an option. While E-Eye laser treatment relies on IRPL technology, it is effective for dry eye disease.

FAQ

1How long is E-Eye laser treatment expected to last?
The treatment only lasts several minutes in the eye doctor’s practice.
2Is E-Eye laser painful?
The treatment is not painful but, on the contrary, quite comfortable.
3What does Intense Regulated Pulsed Light (IRPL) do for dry eye disease?
Bursts of light released at specific wavelengths warm the skin near the meibomian glands and, as a result, eliminate blockages within the glands.
